Dig Into Fall During Root Veggie Day at the Burlington County Farmers Market
Fall is here and the Burlington County Farmers Market is celebrating with a special market day dedicated to some of the season’s most flavorful foods: root vegetables.
From carrots and beets to potatoes, parsnips, and radishes, these underground-grown veggies will be showcased during Root Veggie Day this Saturday, October 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Burlington County Agricultural Center (500 Centerton Road, Moorestown).
During the special root vegetable-themed market day, varieties of the vegetables will be available for purchase. Shoppers will find special prepared dishes with root veggies as ingredients, including carrot cakes and cookies, sweet potato pies and pizzas, radish salsa, pickled carrots, ginger carrot soup, beet granola and scones, and more. There will also be root veggie giveaways, a root vegetable-themed cooking demonstration, veggie crafts, and free carrot cake samples while supplies last.
“The Burlington County Farmers Market is a must-visit destination throughout spring, summer, and fall, and special events like Root Veggie Day offer a little extra excitement,” said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel, liaison to the Department of Resource Conservation, Parks, and Farmland Preservation. “The market is the ideal destination to shop for all varieties of root vegetables, along with other favorite seasonal fruits, vegetables, flowers, beer, seasonal decorations, and sweet treats. If you enjoy fall, make sure to visit the market soon. It’s the perfect place to shop, eat, and enjoy the season.”
Twenty-two different farms are scheduled to sell crops, produce, and farm products at this Saturday’s markets, and six will be offering varieties of root vegetables: Pinelands Produce, Cranberry Hall, Black Sheep Farm, James Durr Farm, Fernbrook Farms, and Homebody Farm.
Twenty-five food vendors will be present, with many offering specials such as The Soup Bar’s loaded potato and ginger carrot soups and Rupert Pizza’s roasted sweet potato and garlic pizza. There will also be 15 artisan craft vendors, along with the 4H Carrot Club, Rancocas Nature Center, and Burlington County Clerk’s Office.
Now celebrating its 20th season, the Burlington County Farmers Market is held rain or shine every Saturday from early May through November 14, with special holiday markets scheduled for November 21 and December 5. There are also several preseason market days in March and April.
In 2024, the market was crowned New Jersey’s favorite farmers market during the American Farmland Trust’s annual poll. This year, the market finished No. 2 in New Jersey and No. 3 in the Northeast.
Earlier this year, the market was also voted No. 5 in the nation during the USA Today 10Best Readers Choice Awards, marking the second consecutive year it finished in the Top 5 in the national poll.
“The farmers market is one of Burlington County’s biggest success stories, and Root Veggie Day is expected to be among the best markets of the season,” said Burlington County Commissioner Randy Brolo. “All the attention the market receives brings more shoppers and sales for local farms and small business vendors. The season is almost over, so make sure to visit soon and discover why it’s been voted one of the best farmers markets in America.”
